As the nation commemorate the EDSA Revolution of 1986 - the event that brought us national pride - today brings us nothing but shame.
The rallies staged today leaves more than just mess on the streets of Ayala and Edsa... it left us with the unsightly reality of our own inadequacies, narrow mindedness and misplaced priorities.
I have nothing to say... maybe because I know nothing. Maybe because I stopped thinking about the government after we ousted a second president using another people power. I just grew numb to the repeated call for presidents to step down, dummies to step up and cronies to swarm around. Personalities showing chameleon colors depending on the political color of the times. I trust no one. I support no one. I think I am one of many who just grew tired hoping this nation will be great again.
Status Quo is good for me. I somehow believe no one is showing the least promise that he / she could make a change in the government anyway. Maybe, whoever he/she is, he/she grew tired of the national squabble as well. For how could a man/woman of peaceful means survive in such a turbulent political climate?
The present president has done a lot of courageous decisions... some favoring her and her family, some favoring the country. In both counts, she appears to have the strength of gut to carry them through.
Today, she declared the country to be under a "state of national emergency". It's about time. It has been in a state of emergency since I could remember. We make mountains out of molehills.
On the contrary, amidst the tragedies and calamities such as those that happened in Ultra and in St. Bernard Leyte, a lot of our politicians showed us that there is no stopping them in protecting their political interests. They may mean well, but instead of struggling to unite the country in prayer, they managed to organize movements against each other. Tell me, how can I trust you?
If only our political leaders respond the way Pope Benedict XVI responded to the religious rift now happening between Muslims and Catholics. He called for the union of all religions and acceptance of different beliefs.
In the end, all I could give is a sigh of resignation. I am an onlooker without hope. My fault? Maybe.
P.S.
I know I offer no refuge to my readers. Just apathy. For a flicker of hope, try this one too. Did I say hope? Just read.
