April 21, 1521

" The cross of Tindalo Wood Encages the Original Cross Planted by Ferdinand Magellan on this very Site. April 21, 1521"

There is no better landmark to site for my visit in Cebu than the famous Magellan's Cross. Surprised as I was in finding myself in Cebu during beach season (thank God!), I found it even more amusing to find myself standing in front of the cross on the very anniversary of Magellan's planting of the cross in our land. 485 years later, we are still rediscovering our faith. Looking up at the murals on the ceiling of this landmark made me imagine how these natives felt when they were being introduced to the faith. How easy or how difficult this might have been for them to embrace such doctrines and belief. Whereas they were used to worshiping the sun, they are now being summoned to look up to the Sto. Nino, or a piece of wood that signifies the sacrifice of a God made Man.

It is easy to imagine faith in our present situation. But if these natives of Cebu were able to accept the faith then, it should be much more easier for us. But as last Sunday's Gospel narrates, doubt is always possible even to men of faith.

"Peace be with you", Jesus' first greeting to His disciples. Afraid, confused, lost as they are, Jesus reassures them that life is not here. Life is an offering. Life is boldly taking each step towards making that perfect gift of ourselves to God.

I stood in front of the cross ashamed. Ashamed on how doubtful, how tepid my relationship with God has been for some weeks now. But I guess there is always room for rediscovery. I just ask Him to conquer my heart again.... without His grace, even this is impossible.
